Orofacial Myology

Orofacial myology is a specialised field within speech-language pathology and dentistry that deals with the assessment and treatment of various orofacial muscle dysfunctions. These dysfunctions may include improper tongue posture, incorrect swallowing patterns (such as tongue thrust), and other oral motor issues.
We work with individuals who have difficulties with speech, swallowing, chewing, and other oral functions that stem from dysfunctional muscle patterns. We also assess the coordination and strength of the muscles involved in these actions and develop therapy plans to correct any abnormalities.

Treatment in orofacial myology often involves exercises and techniques aimed at retraining the muscles to function properly. This may include tongue exercises, lip exercises, and swallowing therapy. The goal is to establish more efficient and functional muscle patterns, which can improve speech clarity, swallowing abilities, and overall oral function.
Orofacial myology may be utilised in conjunction with other therapies, such as speech therapy or orthodontic treatment, to address a range of issues related to oral function and facial muscle coordination.
